i should have emphasized it better that i was talking about system 
settings.

for example on windows xp you can activate "cleartype" by right clicking 
the desktop-> properties-> appearance-> effects-> "use the following 
method to smooth edges of screen fonts"-> clearType.

changing these settings will also effect font rendering in browsers.
