A good practice is to back up coloring with some other tools to convey 
information, like different font.

Conveying information solely by color is a bad practice. You noticed 
that it doesn't convert well to black and white, you'll also notice that 
you'll exclude, de facto, color blind people, who are actually frequent 
(more than most people think).
