Agreed but Silicon Valley is a good choice. (Not because I live there. :))

There is a strong culture of groups having monthly meetings and 
companies donating venues. Arguably, almost any software person knows 
someone in Silicon Valley too, so lodging would be free and more 
comfortable for many.

That would not be as intimate as a meeting at Astoria but would attract 
more audience from many groups of people who are interested in D but not 
as much to fly to another state.
