I think so too.

A TileMap with Sprites is pretty simple:

class Tile : Sprite {
     // ... more features
}
----
Each Tile is stored on fixed points on the screen and represent 
the Tile-Image.

But maybe I will implement the old TileMap implementation again. 
;)
