Better docs for D (WIP)

Thanks, Jacob I think this is a great idea. If anyone would like to 
initiate replacing some uses of file lists with git ls-files, please go 
ahead. And it should work on Windows, too.

The remaining issue is that that makes the makefile assume git is 
installed. Is that reasonable?
