regex.d(339): *+? not allowed in atom

I'm using the regex module in Phobos and getting the following runtime 
exception:

regex.d(339): *+? not allowed in atom

What does that mean and what's an "atom" in this case?
I'm using DMD 2.052 on Mac OS X.
