It can be a showstopper if you're trying to get stuff done. It's not a 
showstopper if you want to learn the language.

To give an example, MonoDevelop in Linux doesn't have a decent GUI 
designer[1], which would be a showstopper for many companies attempting 
to develop portable C# GUI applications using GTK#. However, it's quite 
possible to create a C# GUI application without using a graphical 
designer; it just takes a lot longer and ends up with worse results.


[1] Your mileage may vary. I found it quite difficult to use.
