exactly describes this problem, but it was marked as a duplicate of a more  
general problem in bug 2095

apparently, 2095 is a duplicate of a very old bug 926  
(http://d.puremagic.com/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=926)

I think it's about time this was addressed, especially in the face of  
allowing unsafe operations in safe D.
