Python is not the only language running on a VM, you know. Your 
comparison would be fairer if you happened to choose a statically typed 
language such as Java, which is a bit more performance oriented. If you 
have time, you can try to build a python compiler that compiles to native 
code *without* resorting to damn slow hashmaps.
