On my app you see the threaded messages in a screen and then when you tap or select a message its opened in another view, fullscreen. Go back and you are again in the threaded listing (which the read messages greyed), or tap Next and you go to the next message in the tree without existing the message view.

As I said, not the same level of conveniente than on a computer (you can't see the thread and the message at the same time), but still not so bad.
