I don't mind writing the prototypes myself, but I've thought in the
past that simply putting some common C lib's bindings in etc.c.* -
not the actual implementation or binary, just the header, to minimize
copyright impact - might help this.

While a lot of people still seem to fear the C interface, it might
help lower the bar for both direct use and third party wrappers.
