This is too complicated. Quoting you, "A logo should be *simple*". If 
the goal is to make a simple logo, I'd make it identifiable in 
monochrome (e.g. d-logo-3, 5, 7, 8). Python, Perl and Haskell's logos 
satisfy these, while Ruby is an obvious exception. If it's not 
monochrome I don't see those options simpler than the original 
http://d-programming-language.org/images/dlogo.png.
