I don't really want to meddle too much in domestic matters 
involving a guy and his lawfully wedded config (:P), but have you 
tried w3m?  When I had images enabled before, it just sort 
of...rendered them.  Like over top of the xterm.  It was pretty 
cool; I think it even flowed text around them properly.
