Most academics would love attention (which usually gets you more money) and 
would love to be doing something of import.  The problem is that if you don't 
get sufficient publications in the right journals or conferences, with their 
mandated publication formats, you don't get the career brownie points required 
to keep getting funding (government or otherwise).

It's lock-in via the requirements of the funding organizations, unfortunately. :-(
