That's the mailman mailing list software's normal operation. Once 
a month, it emails your the plain text password as a reminder of 
your subscription.

It is silly, but it is also documented on the signup page:

You may enter a privacy password below. This provides only mild 
security, but should prevent others from messing with your 
subscription. Do not use a valuable password as it will 
occasionally be emailed back to you in cleartext.
