This is not how copyright works. If you base a new logo on the 
old one it is a derived work and the old author will have partial 
ownership in the new logo, so you cannot publish it without 
consent.

If there is a copyright or trademark issue you need a clean break 
(a completely unrelated logo).

Other than that, I agree with Gary.

(And I still think that the "new" design looks like an adobe.com 
rip-off…)
