Perhaps I should have said unusual rather than non-standard. But 
if you want to understand better what I mean, try doing this in 
the command line, it works correctly:

cd \
mkdir test
cd test\
mkdir "..\second test\"
cd "..\second test\"

While it's true that you can also do this, it's not typical:

mkdir "\third test\\"
cd "\third test\\"
