Afaik, the flu shot only covers those viruses that are arlready 
known to scientists (which only makes sense). Since the darn 
things keep mutating all the time, we have to deal with new 
strains every year. So one could argue that the flu shots are 
only of limited usefulness. Maybe a new strain attacked you, and 
maybe, consciously or subconsciously, people who got the shot 
behave more carelessly, (wrongly) assuming that they are immune 
to the flu.
