Another bug probably somehow related to the Thrift test suite breakage; 
at least, I am having a hard time figuring out what is really going on

I don't want to spoil the excitement, but DMD has not caused me as much 
trouble for quite some time - I think we should take extra care to 
ensure that this release is solid.
