<pre wrap="">I agree with your sneaking suspicion, forums are more accessible but its
hard to say exactly why. If I was to set up a forum it would simply appear
in the jbserver.com forums list which is well established and should stay in
place for a long time. Either way I can send you "data feeds" of the forum
data.
Well I am not all for rushing in guns blazing. Perhaps you should ask the
mailing list, feel free to forward these emails on.
Bare in mind that it will probably take a few months for the forum to really
pick up. In the long term it will make an invaluable archive of information
but unlike a mailing list its not really for off-line viewing.
Here are the forum features in more detail:
- The forums are not too fancy but very functional.
- Anyone with an email address can make an account and post.
- No personal information is required (just email which is private).
- Usual features like forgot password emails etc.
- No pop ups (Works with IE and Mozilla etc).
- Custom CSS stylesheet support (if you are that bothered).
- Bad language filter (ok so skyscraper becomes sky****er right now lol).
- The forums are moderated regularly (of course you can be a mod too).
- Users can attach files to posts (example:
<a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="http://www.jbserver.com/forums/ThreadView.asp?ForumId=4&TopicId=23&ThreadId=">http://www.jbserver.com/forums/ThreadView.asp?ForumId=4&TopicId=23&ThreadId=</a>
921&highlight=scope).
- Users can request email notifications when threads change.
- HTML tag support (script tags and some others are removed).
- Custom user icons (woah!).
- Fully searchable.
- Backed up every 24 hours to another server.
- Banning facility for forum spammers and trouble makers (extreme cases
only).
I may have to make a few tweaks (i.e. the "new list" contains new posts for
all forums but I can make this forum specific etc) but I am happy to keep an
eye on it.

Subject: Re: ENet On-Line Forum?
I have no problem with someone else wanting to save me administrative
dirty-work by running the forums for me. :) If you want to set it up, I
can link to it from the site. The only thing I would really be concerned
about is whether the forum will be there in 6 months. I have this
sneaking suspicion not many people bother using mailing list archives
much anyway, as searching on a forum tends to be a ton easier.
What does everyone else on the list think about having a forum?

I was wondering if you had considered creating an on-line forum for
ENet, allowing people to discuss code and shares files in a structured
web based environment. There are some great advantages here including
the ability for newcomers to browse/search through existing categorised
threads on-line.
I rent a web server in Texas and knocked up some forums in ASP with user
management and file sharing (attachments) capabilities
(<a class="moz-txt-link-abbreviated" href="http://www.jbserver.com/forums">www.jbserver.com/forums</a>). I can host a forum for you if you like but
you may want to consider your own system to keep it under your own

Anyway this is just a thought, nothing more. I found that using forums
really helps to build communities from people who otherwise hardly
communicate. Obviously there are major concerns as you already have a
mailing list with possibly years or archived data and it is quite a big
change.
Either way keep up the good work.
