Er, incorrect.

You can use a vanilla out-of-the box Exim 4 and invoke an external program out of an ACL.

I've just spent a week putting together a system which does exactly this, works well, and is currently processing 20,000 delivery attempts per day.

It is running on a Pentium III 1 GHz machine.

"uptime" reports:

  uptime
   18:10:01 up 33 days,  7:54, 25 users,  load average: 0.00, 0.01, 0.00
