I checked on-line and it looks like the MachN (where N is 1 to 4) software from Artsoft at artofcnc.com is the one that has overcome the Windows timing problems. They have demo versions. Very few details, but there is a file of things to check in Windows XP to help reduce/eliminate jitter.

Ok, I have been trying to track down the cause of jitter, missing pulses, etc and it turns out that interrupts in Windows are the cause. When Windows does interrupt the output pulse stream if catches up by outputting pulses too quickly for the stepper motors to respond too.

I have done several experiments where I used a Basic Stamp to output the pulses and saw no problems from missing pulses or jitter. (Note that the BSII only does integer math and has limited memory so it's not the cure all, but it does do smooth stepper driving.)

I suspect it might be possible to have the PC pass RS-232 serial commands to the BSII and then have the BSII generate the output pulse stream. The BSII can actually generate quite a bit output which I may show at some point in the future.

Almost any CNC software will run rouhg under WIndows for the above reasons. I did hear that someone (CNC vendor) has figured out how to make it run smooth under WIndows by using timer1? I don't know who it is or what it costs.

output was being buffered by a basic stamp somehow.
Is there any truth to this rhumor?
