In my opinion, you dodged a major bullet.

Have you SEEN the show?  It makes the families involved out to be  
jackasses.  You end up hating both sides for various reasons.

They contrive these situations where you have multiple volatile  
personalities in a dysfunctional environment with producers prodding  
the participants through contrived setups that are like hot pokers on  
whatever insecurities and troubles the families might have...

The money shot is when the explosive fights and drama ensue.

...and that's what makes it "reality tv"

You may have been, dare I say, too normal and well-adjusted for them!
