PY,

I expect the Ping should work for 2 feet and longer. Not sure why you are having trouble with it.

There is also a PIR (Passive InfraRed) sensor that is used in alarm systems which could detect motion at ranges out to 20 feet. You might find one in a motion activated light, such as a flood lamp for your driveway, etc. Some use a relay to switch the load on, so you could adapt that to trgieer your flower.

You could also use infrared (assuming no other IR sources in the area - beware digital cameras and cam-corders use IR.) You can send out modulated IR and then look for the reflection. The amplitude of the reflection tells you roughly how far away the target is. Light colors on targets make them look closer.

You might also set up a beam-break detector if you can have sensors around the display. That would trigger the flower when someone gets close to it.

Subject: [Robotgroup] RE; Any suggestion on motion sensor

Hi all,

I am working on a project and need some technical advise. In this project, I
have a mechanical flower that start to blossom, blinking and sing song when
it sense motion near it. And stop all the action when the motion stop.

I try to use the "Ping" sensor to sense motion, but the range may be too
short. I would like to have at least 2 to 6 feet of sesning range. Do you
have any suggestion for motion sensor that may work for this project? Any
idea how to interface the sensor with Stamp II?

Thanks in advance for your help!!!

Py
