I'd like to change my answer to what Rick said.

Subject: Re: [Robotgroup] Mission statement discussion
All,
I am reluctant to share my version of a mission statement, as I
feel that it may corrupt some otherwise creative thinking. It may also
be way off the mark. Good luck to all in drafting your own design for
our future.

I propose that all interested parties[1] prepare a draft of their view
for The Robot Group's mission statement. We should convene to discuss
this on 28 September at the weekly meeting.
Imagine for a moment, that we have no mission statement (and, for the
moment, forget the dated statements of purpose in the group's
charter). What should The Robot Group stand for? What should be its
vision, purpose, values and goals?
[I don't care if the word commitment appears in the mission statement
but I strongly believe that any such statement of vision, purpose,
values and goals implies a commitment to achieve them.]
[I would suggest that 'robot(s)' and/or 'robotic(s)' appear in there
somewhere.]
Very soon thereafter, a draft of the consensus mission statement
should be completed and posted for discussion. After another round of
tail-chasing, fly-swatting, and gnat-swallowing, a 'final' version of
the mission statement should be put to a ratification vote at the
annual business meeting.
[1] Derek, Alberto, and Glenn have posted suggestions and discussion
to the list. Rick has prepared a version which he has not yet shared
with the list. I hope that many others will share their thoughts and
ideas, too.
All the best....
Mike
