Only mentioned the fuming nitric acid because Mike was trying lots of chemicals. I don't propose we do this in anyone's kitchen, etc. 
(Of course I've been etching PCBs in the kitchen...)

Personally I think that sanding the LEDs or sand blasting them is probably safe and adequate.

YIKES is right. I don't think Kym would like fuming nitric acid along with 
the rosin for the kids and their cereal!!
