I saw some new robotics kits at Frys. A 3 servo hexapod kit, some little roving bots, a 3 segment snake kit that can be linked to others as well as the standard Mindstorms stuff. These things are programmable but they will all set you back $120 to $250. It seems high, but that really depends on the quality of the servos and the user friendlyness of the programming libraries. I still think its possible to put together a programmable rolling or walking kit for around $50 to $100
