Good point. :) In most cases, a post subject line such as "interesting"
(or similar non descriptive post) that was not robotics/robot group
related would best be preceded by an "OT:" designation in order to allow
those who prefer tech oriented postings to skip reading the post.
As we are not a high volume list (i.e. 10s or 100s of posts per day),
and being as how the post topic is rather clearly labeled as being a
"funny" (IMHO removing the need for the common OT warning) I feel its
acceptable.
In addition, the cartoon has to do with something many folks do as a
major part of building a robot or robotic contraption, which is programming.
The list has been (and AFAIK, will continue to be) an informal
communication medium for like minded individuals. A place to exchange
ideas and information we find interesting.
My $0.02: Occasionally posting things such as this gives everyone common
experiences on which to share opinions and observations. It also
provides an insight into peoples personalities for those who maybe can't
make meetings and/or meet up with us at events.
SO, in direct answer to your question above: I don't think we have any
hard and fast rules on the board for conversational topics other than
"no spamming or flaming". We've got a good group of people, the S/N
ratio is good and the traffic levels are low.
However, I will take a page from my own book and make sure to put "OT:"
in front of any future postings that have no specific technical/ group-
cultural relevance. :)
