When I was a junior in High School (1980) I took an old 21" TV set, 
removed the deflection coil and rewired it for X/Y control of the beam. 
I hooked the X deflection coil to the left output of a stereo amp and 
the Y deflection coil to the right output.

I then used magnets to "gauss up" (magnetize) the screen front to make 
the beam produce different colors depending on what part of the screen 
it was painting.

I pointed a video camera at the screen and played the song "Castle 
Walls" by Styx which created some pretty neat lissajous patterns. :) The 
video was submitted to a state RTF competition in the "experimental 
video" category. I got 1st place and a trophy. :)

The more things change, the more they stay the same I guess. :)
