Mike,

I think the joule thief or something similar could be useful. I can't look
up that link from work. The 'demon' in the URL causes it to be filtered as a
"criminal" site... (no kidding)

The easiest case is if the motor puts out AC. Then a transformer is used to
boost the voltage. Since Raj's son wanted to store some charge (so the LED
would stay lit for a while), a diode after the transformer and a capacitor
would be needed. Yes, the diode is somewhat redundant since the LED is also
a diode. Not sure if there is a clever way to rectify the AC with the LED
and still feed it with the capacitor.
