I can volunteer a laptop for the demo. I don't have the code, but don't mind installing it.

If I can get MPLAB to install on linux then I can demo it, otherwise we need someone to bring a windows laptop that we can utilize at show & tell.
Most of the real work I think is in learning the pic assembly instructions and functionality of chip registers and special features.
What makes Basic Stamps so cool is that the language is higher level and there are some really great helper functions that allow you to interface to things easily. With PICs you start a little closer to the ground. The good news is for PIC18 and PIC30 series the student edition of the C compiler is free so if you arent timing critical you can enjoy a higher level language but you still need to understand the features like setting up an A/D conversion or writing to EEprom or configuring a serial UART or timer. I think there are some peripheral libraries to help with that.
I dont know about other languages like BASIC variants for PICs, there might be something affordable.
Once you get running though, these are smaller hurdles.
One thing to mention, when doing a one up design then it's best to go with a higher end micro. A $2 difference in micro's gives you a little more memory, timers, speed, etc which could cut days off design time in some circumstances.

Any chance of getting some MPLAB pointers from either Gray or Alberto? I'd
like to try it, but need some coaching.
Paul
