KNOPPIX, the most popular LiveCD

Knoppix is a LiveCD. This means you can try out the Linux operating
system without installing anything. You merely have to boot your
computer from the CD. All the software necessary to run will be running
off the CD itself. It will not write any changes to a hard drive or a
USB memory stick unless you want it to. This is invaluable if your
installation of Windows starts having problems, as you will be able to
use this Live CD (Knoppix) to test your hardware (to determine whether
you have a hardware problem or a software one), retrieve files from the
hard drive, or even get to the Internet if software problems prevent you
from doing so otherwise. You can even use the Live CD to do a complete
backup (bare-metal backup) of every single bit on your hard drive so
that you can restore to that state in the future. (This is impossible
unless you boot from a medium other than your hard drive, and Knoppix
makes these kinds of backups as simple as typing the right command.
Once you get familiar with Knoppix and want to do a bare-metal backup,
ask me for the commands you need.)

If you really want to install Linux to your hard drive, Knoppix can be
used to do that, too. That will make Knoppix run faster because the
hard drive is faster than the CD-ROM drive. If you have a gigabyte of
RAM, you can type "knoppix toram" (without the quotes) on the first
Knoppix prompt (and then press Enter) to load Knoppix into RAM, which
will make Knoppix run as fast as your machine can run any software.

  - Download the DVD or CD ISO image from there. Be sure to burn your
image as a bootable image. (I prefer the CD because it loads faster and
you can use the "knoppix toram" trick.)
