Do you get prettier / more interesting colors if you *don't* wash the soap off first?  You did experiments involving 12-volt batteries and combustion when you were four years old?  That's terrifying, considering that I have a 3 y/o.

But, if you really want to see something crazy try a larger current source 
like a 12V lantern battery then you will really see some cool stuff. When I 
was like 4-5 years old, I used to go into my moms cleaning stuff, take the 
SOS pads, wash them of their soap and then burn them all up :) My poor mom 
always thought she used them up :)
