Brooks,
Also, to test email you can set "read / delivery receipt" this gives
you information, plus its a good way to track if people are getting
your email. When I do business, I get a "read receipt" when someone
owes me money, then they say, "I never got that email", of course, I
know they are lying! But, bottom line is with all the spam and
firewalls, you have no idea if an email got to its destination unless
you enable read/delivery receipt, so they are good habits plus let
you know if email is working other than local echo back to you.
Of course, may web mails don't support it, but many do.

Hey kids,
I'm back online(I think). I sent a message last night but it did
not show up on the list so this is just a test.

Of course, any decent mail client has a feature to disable read /
delivery receipts. Such receipts are used by assholes for nefarious
purposes as well as by folks with legitimate purposes.
I do not rely on email for debt collection. It has not proven to be
a reliable communications medium for me. YMMV. First-class postage
on an envelope containing the dunning boilerplate or invoice ... add
tracking features as necessary ... works like a charm.
