john,
hi there. I'm sorry if somehow I forgot to reply to your email. I thought
I had. I was hoping to meet some of you last Friday at Quacks at David
Nunez's thing, but it got canceled.
I know these things take some time, but I'm thinking that the strategy would
be to start with the guts of some small RC toy, like perhaps a tiny tank
with a spinning turret and use that as the base and add on top some model
elements from kits.
Since this is a series proposal, and since we also will have a CG version
for some of it, we can start with a mockup that does little more than travel
around the ground and have some light up features, and some of the actions
can be added to it over time if possible.
Moreover, it is not important if all the functions of the robot actual occur
within the SAME robot. since its a film, we can make multiple identical
robots, with each one having a specific set of functions. For example, it
will probably have some sort of arm or arms, and it is unlikely that we
would need the arms to move around and grab things in the same shot that the
little guy is traveling along the floor, so those two functions could be
separated, and the engineering greatly simplified.
In any event, If there are a few folks with interest in film FX, this would
be a fun low=stress entry into the medium. I hope to put together maybbe
one person to work on the "guts" of the puppet/machine and a modelmaker
person to help create the exterior aesthetic. I'm talking to some sci-fi
modelmakers who could be helpful.
I look forward to meeting some of you guys in person whenever you get
together next, and you can tell me in person how crazy an idea this is.
;-)
