Years ago before the iron curtain fell I heard about this phenomenon that
all tubes were being made in Russia
I had thought about, but never got around to, making tube
amps and calling them Ivans or something. I would have painted them red and
added some strands of barbed wire across the grille cloth.
A cool story my dad told me many years ago. One of the few companies making
tubes in the US (there were only two or three) was having the same problem
as it's competitors. The furnace that produced the glass for the tube
envelopes could not be shut down without major overhaul being required so it
sat idle off shift and burned lots of gas or electricity keeping itself warm
overnight. Someone came up with a brilliant idea. They made a second set
of molds and when the machine wasn't making tubes it was making the
ubiquitous wavy water glasses in which you get your ice water served in
restaurants.
