Robert,

My laptop has no serial connector.  I ordered one of those Parallax 
serial-USB adapter cables (cheaper than Fry's had them and guaranteed 
to work).  I've had no problem whatsoever.

I'll bring it along next week.  You can try it out during the meeting 
if you so desire.  I cannot loan it out as it is undergoing heavy 
daily use but, at least, you'd know if there is a problem awaiting.
