Clearly this is the only way to accomplish anything. I like the ideas 
presented already, but I'll just throw this one in -- how about 
limiting the range of the controller? Put up a small antennae in the 
center of the ring, wire in the controller to that, limit the range to 
the 20 foot radius. Any time the droid stops reliably receiving, it 
undoes the last few moves and maximizes signal reception, therefore 
coming back into range.
