[Robotgroup] CD/hard drive hacks?

Or could you tell me what kind of preamps or drivers are used and are they purchaseable/buildable as individual devices not embeded in some overall controller/proccessor? I want to physicly connect a linkage to the arm the heads are mounted on and be able to write a bunch of differant frequency or noise tracks in differant locations and then just manualy move the head back and forth to play it like a musical instrument. There is no money involved so, unlike my grant writing disaster, I should be quite successfull.
