GIF can have multiple frames. I haven't investigated the actual file 
format, but you don't need to know that to do what you want to do.

^ which suggests using mplayer for conversions. I never knew mplayer 
could be used for conversions, but whatever.

Imagemagik (the 'convert' command) can also do wonderous things. ;-)
