If he was using a 10amp rate charger to charge a 17Ah capacity battery, it's
not surprising at all. Rule of thumb is never bulk charge at more than 1/10th
of the battery's capacity. So for those little cars, that's 1.7A max.
Automotive chargers tend to be bulk chargers only, they dont stop until you disconnect them.
The nicer ones, with the LED readouts and controls, are OK for the bigger bot batteries
if you set them to 2.0Amp max and SLA/Gel mode so they don't overcharge or cause the
electrolyte to start electrolysis, producing hydrogen and oxygen gas. That's BOOM time.
