Just keep in mind that I have a newer version of the non-reduced code that
seems to show the same problem across a much wider variety of permutations of
compilers and options.

If you can't figure out what's going on from this one, let me know and I'll try
to reduce the newer code. (But I'd rather not unless I have to, because this
project takes a while to reduce.)
