If you give up installing DMD you could try ldc 
http://www.dsource.org/projects/ldc
which has ready ubuntu packages (x86, x86_64/amd64, lpia) and daily 
builds, http://www.dsource.org/projects/ldc#Ubuntuldcandldcdailypackages
