It's a word in and of itself, not the shortening or butchering of another word.
According to merriam-webster.com ( http://www.merriam-
webster.com/dictionary/ditto ), it comes from Italian. It's the past participle
of the Italian word dire (to say) - which also happens to be the French word for
to say, but French has a different past participle.
