For what it's worth, MS appears to be moving away from the registry as 
the place to store things.  The .NET API uses XML formatted files for 
such things.

MS seems to be built on the idea of finding the most complex solution 
possible for simple problems.  Sometimes I think they do it so they can 
farm out contract work.
