I feel a more utilitarian approach would suit D better. This design 
seems far too dark and I fail to see how it's an improvement on the 
current site.

The Python site at http://www.python.org looks great and conveys a 
professional feel, while actually being fairly plain. One of the nicer 
language sites I've seen.
