Sounds like room for improvement to me.

Not that I'm ruling out that we just don't know how to do this yet. Any
clarification would be appreciated. Until then I'm sticking with my
runtime error message. I agree it's a shame, because this is exactly the
sort of error the compiler should catch. I would think this should be
able to expand to self-written error messages.
