No, I don't find them silly, because head-tail is very common not just in common english use but also in programming although there might be some ambiguity. If I use toe (or anything else for that matter) for some time I'm sure I will get used to it. Moreover to me both expressions "head to toe" and "head to tail" mean the same. But when thinking about getting an element tail feels better than toe. Getting the toe element somehow does not compile in my head :/ Even better might be rhead or simply first-last!
