For linear chronological view it's a natural thing.

Also:
1. Messy software screws your threads for real. In a forum a post ends up right where it belongs to: messy clients are not a problem for chronological order.
2. "Oops, I deleted your post in my Pan client and don't know how to get it back, I'll just post reply somewhere". With forum this is just impossible: posts are on the server.
