Download the source and build the project you are interested in.
Go to its bug tracker / wish list and pick a simple task.
Implement the fix. Submit pull-request, respond to comments, and
stick with it until it is merged.
Those are the bare minimum steps to be able to join GSoC. Besides
proving that you are capable of contributing to the project, it
gives you a better idea of the internals of the project and what
part of it you'd like to contribute to.
I don't mean to scare you off, but be aware of what you
communicate.

This to me leaves a bad impression (I've been a GSoC mentor (and
student) several times).
I expect a GSoC student to have an intrinsic interest in the
project, and be proactive and more self-directed. Searching for
"dlang gsoc" on Google gives our GSoC Ideas pages as first hits.
